Air Fryer Potato Fritters

Air Fryer Potato Fritters or latkes are a delightful and healthier twist on traditional deep-fried fritters. These fritters are made with grated potatoes mixed with various flavorful ingredients, and they are cooked to perfection in an air fryer.

Whether you call them potato pancakes or air fryer fritters, they are just the same. They are unique because they are made with shredded potatoes, green onions, and breadcrumbs.

The air fryer ensures that they become golden and crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside.

No extra oil, no fat, and no grease making them healthy and delicious.

The versatility of this dish is another highlight, you can customize it by adding different herbs, spices, or even vegetables to suit your taste preferences.

Whether enjoyed as a snack, a side dish, or even as a breakfast item, these Air Fryer Potato Fritters are a delicious and guilt-free way to savor the satisfying taste.

A close look at ready to be served air fryer potato fritters

My childhood memories are filled with a deep affection for potato fritters. My mother used to prepare them for me quite often, and that love extended to various other potato dishes like French fries, sweet potato fries, and smashed potatoes—they all held a special place in my heart.

And the same is the case with my siblings as well; in fact, these air fryer potato fritters have become a family favorite.

I like the versatility of this recipe as it offers more customization. You can modify the combination of any vegetables, meat, herbs, and spices.

Let’s start with their cooking process.

3 medium size potatoes

1 medium size onion

2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs

1 teaspoon salt

1 medium size green onions

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

Cooking Guide

To make these delicious air fryer potato fritters, begin by peeling and washing. Then grate the potatoes and add them into a bowl filled with cold water. In the same bowl, grate a medium-sized onion, and then drain the water. Squeeze out excess liquid from the grated potatoes and onions using a kitchen towel.

Combine the grated mixture with salt and black pepper.

Take a separate bowl, whisk two eggs and add them along with green onions to the potato mixture. Incorporate 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs, ensuring all ingredients are well mixed.

Now shape the mixture into rounds and place them in the air fryer basket, gently pressing them down and brushing with olive oil.

Air fry at 400°F for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until achieving a beautifully browned and crispy exterior.

Tips & Notes

1- If you don’t have breadcrumbs, you can use flour as well. I like to use breadcrumbs as they result in better crispiness.

2- You can use bacon crumbles in fritters to make them more filling.

3- Shape the potato fritters into uniform circles and rounds for more even cooking.

4- Flip the fritters halfway through.

5- Grating potatoes in cold water helps to remove excess starch content.

Topping Variations & Dipping Sauce for Potato Fritters

There are a variety of topping options to consider. I like the combination of sweet and savory ingredients such as crumbled bacon, cheddar cheese, and chives for an amazing flavor experience.

If you want some extra heat, add a sprinkle of chili flakes on top before serving. Alternatively, for something sweeter, nutmeg, cinnamon, or brown sugar will give the potato fritters a great depth of flavor.

Serve the fritters either on their own with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce. Sour cream, yogurt dip, coleslaw, and hot sauce are all great options.

You can have them as a snack or a side dish. I like to have them with cheese stuffed chicken breast for a complete meal.

Reheating & Storing Guide

Store any leftover potato fritters for 3 days in an air tight container in your fridge.

For reheating, simply microwave for 1 minute or cook for 2-3 minutes at 350 F in air fryer.

Can you make frozen potato fritters in the air fryer?

Yes, for sure. I like to use RÖSTI potato fritters as they taste good.

If you are short of time and don’t want to go through the prep process, simply buy any brand of frozen potato fritters from a nearby grocery store and air fry them.

What types of potatoes are best for making Potato Fritters in an air fryer?

Russet potatoes and Yukon gold potatoes are my favorites. Both are widely used for making fritters. Russet potatoes contain high starch content and low moisture while Yukon potatoes contain low starch and have a buttery flavor and they turn out crispier. They provide a fluffy texture on the inside and turn golden and crispy on the outside when cooked in an air fryer.

How long do the Potato Fritters need to cook in the air fryer to achieve a crispy texture?

Not long, just 10 minutes. For more crispiness, slightly increase cooking time by 1-2 minutes and there you go, your potato fritters are ready to be served. Enjoy them hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

What dipping sauces pair well with Air Fryer Potato Fritters?

I like to use plain ketchup with potato fritters. Some other classical options are mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, ranch dressing, spicy ketchup, and honey mustard. And the list goes on and on, you can make any pair of two sauces as well and make a unique combination.

What are the topping variations for potato fritters?

I like to use cheese toppings for potato fritters, you can do the same. You can also use shredded mozzarella cheese and caramelized onions as topping. Other topping options are fresh parsley, cilantro, and salsa.
